There is no credible test that shows the Fuel Doctor FD-47 [Platinum] affects fuel economy or does power conditioning or filtering.

Tests that show benefit are fatally flawed. They are not done to accepted automotive industry standards (EPA drive cycle for example), they are not double blind, use inaccurate methods of fuel consumption measurement, are not done in a controlled environment, are not independently funded, and are not conducted by professional metrologists.

The manufacturer claims that a vehicles electrical system will degrade over time, but has provided no evidence to support this claim. They have also provided no evidence that noise disrupts the ECU and causes inaccurate fuel metering. They have not shown noise reduction by the FD-47 in a vehicle.

The claims made on their web site, on the packaging, and in the patent application are irrational and unsupported by fact.

Consumer Reports tested the Fuel Doctor FD-47 and Fuel Doctor FD-47 Platinum. They found that both products failed to improve fuel economy or House Power horsepower.

What does it do ?

The manufacturer says on their web site:
"Fuel Doctor’s FD-47 is The Fuel Efficiency Booster. The FD-47 increases a vehicle’s miles per gallon (MPG) through power conditioning of the vehicle’s electrical systems. Conditioned and clean power allows the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU), fuel injection and engine timing equipment to operate more efficiently. When the vehicles engine runs more efficiently it will require less fuel, produce more power and have reduced exhaust emissions (reduced CO2). As a vehicle matures, the power systems tend to generate and experience more electrical noise or electrical interference. This noise can have many detrimental effects on the vehicle’s systems and decrease their efficiency. The FD-47 simply plugs into the lighter socket/power port and the power conditioning qualities of the FD-47 help to reduce and remove this noise and to restore your vehicle’s efficiency."
They state in the patent application:
[0043] FIG. 4A is a diagram of a circuit 400 for smoothing the voltage signal of a vehicle, according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, circuit 400 serves as a voltage regulator for the voltage in the vehicle. Circuit 400 uses a capacitor diode setup 405 to store excess electrical power and supplement voltage deficiencies of the voltage signal of the vehicle. The circuit includes a DC-DC converter control circuit 410 (e.g. MC34063) to control the functionality of circuit 400 and provide a smoother stabilized voltage signal in the electrical circuits of the vehicle. Optionally, the circuit includes LED 280 to provide indication that fuel consumption reducer 100 is functional.

An analysis of the circuit shows that it:

FD-47 Platinum Schematic

Detailed circuit description

The top half of the schematic is a comparator circuit that determines if the battery voltage is above or below 11.5 volts and illuminates the corresponding indicator LED. The bottom half uses a MC34063A switching voltage regulator as a comparator. It is not used as a voltage regulator. The battery voltage is divided by R9 and R8 and presented to the feedback input of the regulator. The regulator output will be off when the feedback voltage is higher than the internal 1.25 volt reference. The result is that the green on/off led will be on when the battery voltage is below 15.68 volts. This circuit does not do "power conditioning of the vehicle’s electrical systems."

This is what each component does:
F1 - Limits available current to prevent smoke or fire in case of malfunction
D5 - Protects the circuit from reverse voltage
C3/ C4 - Creates a low impedance voltage source for the circuit
R1 / R2 - A voltage divider that reduces the supply voltage by a factor of 0.872 (87.2 %)
R3 / Z1 / Z2 - A 10.0 volt reference
C5 - Reduces low/normal LED flicker near threshold
U1 - Compares the output of the voltage divider to the 10.0 volt reference voltage. The transition point will be 10 / 0.872 = 11.47 volts
D1 / D2 - Voltage indicators
R4 / R5 - Limit LED current for D1 and D2
U2 - Switching voltage regulator (used as a comparator)
C1 - Timing capacitor for U2
R7 - Current limit sense resistor for U2
R9 / R8 - Voltage divider that sets U2 transition voltage to 15.68 volts. 1.25 * ( 1 + ( 15.0 / 1.3 ) ) = 15.673 volts
C2 - Output filter for the switching voltage regulator
R10 - Not used
R6 - Limit LED current for D4
D4 - On/Off indicator (on below 15.68 volts)

Detailed circuit description

The FD-47 contains two "textbook" circuits. The top half of the schematic is a comparator circuit that determines if the battery voltage is above or below 11.5 volts and illuminates the corresponding indicator LED. The bottom half is a switching voltage regulator that is very common in automotive cell phone chargers. The circuit is from the MC34063A spec sheet with one very important change. The usual inductor that is required for a switching regulator has been replaced by a capacitor. This change makes the regulator non-functional. Even if the regulator circuit was functional, the output goes nowhere! This circuit does not do "power conditioning of the vehicle’s electrical systems."

This is what each component does:
F1 - Limits available current to prevent smoke or fire in case of malfunction
D5 - Protects the circuit from reverse voltage
C4 - Creates a low impedance voltage source for the circuit
R1 / R2 - A voltage divider that reduces the supply voltage by a factor of 0.872 (87.2 %)
R3 / Z1 - A 10.0 volt reference
U1 - Compares the output of the voltage divider to the 10.0 volt reference voltage. The transition point will be 10 / 0.872 = 11.47 volts
R10 / R11 - Bias voltage for Q1 and Q2. The comparator has an open collector output, so these resistors are required to turn the transistors on.
Q1 / Q2 - Turn on LEDs D1 and D2
D1 / D2 - Voltage indicators
R4 / R5 - Limit LED current for D1 and D2
U2 - Switching voltage regulator
C1 - Timing capacitor for U2
R7 - Current limit sense resistor for U2
R9 / R8 - Voltage divider that sets U2 output voltage to 8 volts. 1.25 * ( 1 + ( 8.2 / 1.5 ) ) = 8.08 volts
C3 - Output filter for the switching voltage regulator
C2 - This should be an inductor. Using a capacitor here makes the voltage regulator non-functional!
D3 - Schottky diode for inductor discharge
R6 - Limit LED current for D4
D4 - On/Off indicator (always on!)

A statement from Mr. Hershko regarding the Consumer Reports testing:

please read carefuly
Dear Genius,
My name is Tzvika Hershko. I am the owner of the fuel doctor product. And I have a few things to say to you- read carefuly
I was reading your so called review and god you are a genius. It seems that you know everything and should get first prize in blowing the mind of people in BS.
Yes, this is the level that I choose to answer you because your so called review is shallow, full of lies, inaccurate information, envy and ho-slandering - there is a law against writing lies and inaccurate information about someone of something.
Since you never tested our product and naturally never bothered to read the complete information behind the consumer report lies – naturally it was much more interested to jump on the wagon and throw some dirt, you have not right to criticize the performance of our product. Moreover, you are breaking the law and I intend to make sure that you will be prosecuted for it. I have a very nice lawyer that is just waiting for people like you who think they can take the hard work of many people and just throw dirt without even thinking on the effect on all the people who are involved in the project- just because you have a computer and keyboard.
Well, let me tell you something my friend- you are not the first and probably not the last that will do what you do- and you know why? Because you are probably siting at home thinking about your shitty job and think to yourself- why I did not think about something like that? And then the first thing that comes into your small mind is- Ya- let's throw some dirt on these people that were creative and invested time and money just to feel better with myself! WOW – great idea.
Finally, read carefully the reports that made by these whom you say that tested our product and it did not work- maybe you ever heard the phrase "compare apples with apples" and then you will learn better not to make a stupid of yourself!
I challenge you and everyone who would like to see by himself- I challenge you to come and see the truth in your own eyes- come and do a test- be present at all time- all the time and if the results comes negative I will pay your flight ticket, hotel, all the expenses and publish an apology on national TV- let's see you- you are a hero behind a keyboard like all the other geniuses that decide to write a review before even testing our product.
Tzvika Hershko- busy in doing – not talking!
